What Apple Macbook To Buy VERIFIED
The stock on Apple's refurbished site is based on what people return or have replaced. That means the refurbished products that are available are constantly fluctuating and are only available in very limited quantities. It also means many of the Macs that are available may not be stock machines, instead featuring various upgrades to hardware like RAM, SSD storage, and processors.
What Apple Macbook To Buy
Purchasing a refurbished Mac can be confusing because Apple offers older machines right alongside newer machines. It's often difficult to tell the difference between processors and other hardware between years, especially for those who don't keep up with what's new in Apple's yearly refreshes.

If you aren't sure which version your Mac is running, Apple has a handy support page with step-by-step instructions for finding not only what OS the device is running, but also the version number (handy for keeping track of updates) and what hardware it's using (which is great for confirming the seller is being truthful about the build they're trying to get you to buy).
And then there's the newest elephant in the room: Apple's move off of Intel x86 processors to Arm (or what Apple calls "Apple Silicon"). If you haven't been following along, Macs running Intel processors are going to be phased out over the next two years, and Macs based on Apple's own chips will replace them. That puts an obsolescence countdown clock on every Intel-based Mac.
I reached out to OWC, which sells refurbs, and it told me a lot of folks are running somewhat older OS versions. But beware. It's not just the OS that obsoletes. I got hit with Chrome not upgrading on a too-old machine. Even when using other browsers, Gmail wouldn't work. Apparently, Gmail also checks the OS version.
If you made it this far, you're probably considering buying the machine. Make sure you have an administrative login to the machine. You can check this by shutting down, booting back up, logging in with what you think is your administrative account, and looking at Users & Groups in System Preferences to make sure the account you're logged into says "Admin."
Finally, make sure there's no firmware password. Apple details how to turn on and off a firmware password, and here's a short guide for what to do if you can't disable the password. If you can't turn off the firmware password before you buy the machine, don't buy the machine.
When it comes to Amazon, you can do a search for used MacBook Pros by model year, but the company doesn't list them that way. Instead, it lists the model number of the Mac, which makes it harder to know what you're looking at.
I can't really answer any of those questions because I don't have twins in college. I can't imagine what it takes to balance the stress and pride of that situation. All I can do is wish my correspondent (and anyone else in his position) the best of luck.
I want to like the Mac platform but I have to say that the MacOS is just weak when it comes to file management. I still see Macs as computers for soccer moms, for people who do not want to know anything about what they are doing on a computer. I asked a Mac user recently where she stores all of her photo files and she said she has no idea where they are.
The US is definitely the cheapest place to purchase Apple products, such as MacBooks and iPads. Prices in Apple's online store in the US can be as little as 50% of what other retailers across the world might charge.

The MacBook is in an unusual place: there has not been a more exciting time for it in years, but that is partly because of what is expected to come. The M1 was just the beginning of Apple's plans for its own chips. The future computers that integrate it are likely to be far more of a departure than the existing ones were from their predecessors, finally bringing updated designs and new capabilities.
